Wye Oak

Pfeilgasse, 2011

It is not an easy day for Jenn Wasner. The drive from Munich to Vienna takes longer than expected, all the promo stuff has to be done under time pressure and there are some long-distance relationship troubles to settle. It is all the more impressive to see with which sheer energy the singer and songwriter of the Baltimore-based duo Wye Oak (Andy Stack plays drums, keyboards and produces the records) performs! We walk to a tiny square with some benches and bushes, not far from the venue of the show. Jenn plays a couple of chords to warm up and then quickly starts into the title track of Wye Oak’s current album, „Civilian“, or the old stand-by, as Jenn calls it. After the powerful rendition of their „hit“ she treats us with a beautiful take on the fingerpicked „My Creator“ and a great, windswept version of „Holy Holy“. It is a pity that Vienna appears so empty and lifeless on that day and not more people witness Jenn’s short street concert.

Pfeilgasse

There is not much Pfeilgasse stands out for. It is just an average small and quiet street traversing Vienna’s 8th district Josefstadt. Places of excitement are few, with the most remarkable one probably being the infamous Pfeilheim, a student dormitory that is currently being renovated. After the reopening in September 2011 it definitely has a reputation for excessive student parties to defend. Pfeilgasse also crosses two small parks: Tigerpark and, a bit further out, a nameless square with some benches and bushes. Only a few footsteps further you reach the busy Gürtel area with its numerous bars, cafés and music clubs.
